I cannot live without cold brew coffee. As soon as a tried it once, it quickly became my summer coffee staple. If you are like me and just cannot do hot coffee in the summer, or iced coffee is feeling lackluster or watered down, then this is for you.

I am sharing this recipe because a lot of people do not realize how quick, easy, and inexpensive it is to make your own cold brew coffee at home. Plus, making it yourself saves you a trip to Starbucks or Dunkins, saves you money, and cuts down on all that plastic waste that goes along with to-go coffee.

In this recipe I use a 1:4 (ground coffee to water) ratio and a glass pitcher as my vessel (holds approx. 8 cups, plus the grounds).

I buy my coffee beans whole, then grind myself to get the coarseness I want, but you could definitely use pre-ground coffee if you don’t have a coffee grinder or just want to keep it super simple.

The most important thing is finding a strength level you enjoy. What I share here is what is preferable to me, so you can try this as a base and then play around with it until you achieve your cold brew coffee dreams.

Prep Time 5 mins
“Brew” Time (Minimum) 12 hrs
Course Drinks
Servings 8 cups

Equipment

  • cheese cloth, strainer, or nut milk bag

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Coarsely ground coffee (Or adjust per desired strength. I'm using a 1:4 ratio (ground coffee to water).
  • 8 cups Water filtered or well water for best flavor

Instructions

  • Grind the coffee beans. They should be the consistency of granulated sugar or even coarser is fine too. (This helps you strain them out easily.) 2 cups of whole beans yields about 1 cup of ground coffee.
  • Once your coffee is ground, add to the bottom of a pitcher.
  • Measure your water and pour into the pitcher over your ground coffee.
  • Let it steep in the fridge for at least 12 hours or longer/overnight.
  • Strain out coffee grinds. I use a nut milk bag for this because it ensures all grinds are removed, leaving nothing but magical liquid.
